When you become a pharmacy technician you will perform duties under the watchful eye of a licensed pharmacist. You will have many responsibilities such as keeping a correct and updated inventory, labeling bottles, counting out the correct dosage of medicine and acquiring patient background and any other important information. You may also be in charge of updating patient information and completing additional paperwork for insurance companies.

To learn pharmacy technician skills you are required to take a one semester course that earns you four college units. This class meets is an evening course that meets once a week. You also have to take the MATH 050 course and keep your GPA at 2.0. If you keep a Math rank of 4, you will also need to take the Pharmacology (AHCC 110) course. In addition to the classes, you must be able to pass a background check by having a record clean of any criminal drug offenses.

The pharmacy technician skills needed for this career are alertness, a keen observation, good organizational skills, dedication to do your job well and the drive to help others. You need to be able to understand instructions, do your work without much immediate supervision and allow supervisors to review your work. You also need to be able to work well in a team environment.

Pharmacy technician pay differs by each state, and sometimes cities, with the typical rate being about $13.00 an hour. The recent lowest hourly rate is $9.27, and the highest goes up to $18.00 an hour. If you graduate in the top 10% of your class you can expect to make around $14.26 an hour right away.
